Modern map-making may bo said to havo begun with Gerhard Kramer, known to fame as " Mercator," who in 1569 published his map of tho world in which his method of geographical projection was first used. Tho only known copy is in tha Bibliothequo Nationale in Paris. In tho samo year ono Humphrey Lluyd (or Lloyd) is said to havo published the first modorn map of England. Incidentally it is to Mercator (hat wo owe tho word " Atlas." which was chosen by him und popularly adopted, though his own " Atlas" only niado its first appearance in 1594, a few months after Mercator's death.
