Tho English-bred horse Night Raid, who has boon brought into prominence by tho performances of his son Nightmarch. it is interesting to relate, .is included anions the cheap horseß bought in England. When rising three years old Night Raid wna sent up to auction in England and he wns bought for 120 gnu. After serving a season at tho stud in Now South Wales Nighi Raid was bought by Mr. A. L. Roberts, of Otago, and Nightmarch, a New Zealand i Derby winner, was included among the first batch of foals that he sired in tho Dominion. LUCK IN BREEDING. Tho importance of having luck on your Sido in dealing with racehorses ia best exemplified by relating tho . history, of Isinglass, the largest stake-winner in the history of the English turf (remarks u London writer). Lord Alington owned » Wcnlouk mare named Deadlpck, which he thought so little of that ho sold her to Captain Machell for £2O, but a sovereign of that amount was returned for luck. Captain Machell soon parted with Deadlock, but later, on ho recognised her in pulling a farmer's cart. Ho made a deal with the farmer and exchanged' a cart colt for tho mare. Mating her with Isonomy, he bred Isinglass, who won him the Derby and St. Leger and stakes amounting to over £57,000, us well us a fortune in bets. SIRES OP THE SEASON. A . young sire- to go to the stud this year, in the Auckland district is To Monanui. Got by Potoa, a son of Monoform and grandson of Hotchkiss, the Musket strain is early found in the pedigree of Te Monanui and it comes to him through a very noteworthy ohannel. Unity; dam of Te Monanui, is by Lupiu (son of Peter Flower and grandson of Petrarch) from Modesty, a daughter of Tasman (son of St. Albans). It will, therefore, bo seen that Te Monanui's pedigree ia woll studded with illustrious names. Te Monanui is a horse of true masculine physiquo and there is every reason to anticipate his success as a sire. Te Monanui is now owned by Mr. H. Weston, of Avondnle.

LifeHfc rain fell in the district to-day, but tho track promises to be in good order. Dutch Money will be in keon demand for the .Longbeach Haok Handicap .as oho is a class above the opposition and hao not been harshly treated. Phaster has been disap'poiutinff, but better results are expected from him this soason. Desert Bong, Meprisailt and Straightcourse should run well. ' • Tho field for the principal evout, tho Ash- , burton Handicap, is unfortunately not strong numerically, but tho presence of three New Zealand Cup oandidatos in Hoylako, Chide and Prieklea will lend interest to tho race.
