EXPORT OF WHEAT.
"A DISTINCT ANOMALY."
FLOUR BEING IMPORTED.
BUSINESS MAN'S REVIEW.
[by TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT, j DUNEDIN, Wednesday. In connection with tho decision of thoNow Zealand Wneatgrowers' Cooperative Association, Limited, to export wheat from New Zealand, and tho statement by Mr. R. McPherson, manager of tho company, that a largo amount of new money would bo brought into tho country, there is a distinct anomaly, according to a well-known Dunedin business man. Ho said that at present thero was a largo amount of muuoyjgoing to Australia and Canada from New Zealand for tho purchase of flour, and also to the former country for the purchase of wheat.
To emphasise his point, he said the following wero tho importations of flour for August:—From Canada, 397 tons; Australia, 194 tons; United States, 40 tons; total, 631 tons. Tho following wero tho importations to New Zealand for other months this year February, 792 tons; March, 963 tons; April, 903 tons; May, 830 tons; June, 673 tons; July, 833 tons.
Apart from flour importations a considerable quantity of unprepared grain was brought to the Dominion, as the following values would show:—l 929 (seven months), £53,136; 1928, £182,015; 1927, £228,999. Thero was no doubt, said tho speaker, that thero was a considerable surplus of wheat in tho Dominion at present. That being so, it seemed strango that about 10,000 tons of flour should be imported every year, in addition to tho unprepared grain aiso brought into the country.
