CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
COURT AT WINTER SHOW.
The Ouehunga-Manukau Chamber of , Commerce met last evening, the prssU dent, Mr. D. H. Kirk-Jones, presiding. Discussing the prospects of having a Manukau district court the next Win* ter Show, the chairman said it was virtually impossible to win the priza under the present allocation of points, but Mr. C. F. Millies had agreed to act as organiser if a court was to be prepared. The manufacturers in the district were willing to support it, as ifc undoubtedly gave publicity to the town and district. He thought they should again try to have the points altered, so that more encouragement would be given to manufactures.
It was decided to organise a court., The secretary, Mr. A. G. Houldsworth,' pointed out that it would be necessary to invoke the assistance of all the manu« faeturers in the district. The following committee was set up to make the preliminary inquiries and report lo next meeting:—Messrs. C. F. Milnes (chair, man), L. Bray, F. H. Dodd, W. Lovering, T. H. McKeever, J. K. Ross and A. H. Houldsworth (secretary). It was decided to endorse the action of the council, of the chamber in recommending the Associated Chambeis of .Commorce to oppose the extra primage duty proposed by the Government, sub. stituting an increased duty on luxuries and foreign goods. Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., will be asked to support this view, when the matter is discussed in Parliainent, urging as an alternative a higher; duty on goods produced outside the Enj» pire, chiefly luxuries.
