TRAWLERS' AWARD.
QUESTION OF PREFERENCE
A now award fixing the terms of cmplovment of vho seamen and firemen on Messrs. Sail ford's trawlers lias been filed by (lie Arbitration Court. The matters in dispute were wages, hours of labour at sea and the term of the award, and the Court lias settled these on the lines of the expired industrial agreement. As it was questionable whether the Court had jurisdiction to include in an award the preference provisions recommended by the Conciliation Council, these, clauses'have been omitted meantime, and the Court is stating a case for Ihn opinion of the Court, of Appeal on the point. Tho proposed clause would make it a condition of employment that tho applicant "become and remain" a member of tho union. The Court has reserved power to amend the award to deal with the preference question after the decision of tho Court of Appeal. The new award will come into force on September 23 and remain in operation for two years.
