Tho erection of "bachelor" fl(a»s within tho city was opposed in a roport submitted to the Auckland Town Planning Association last evening by Miss Alice Hasten, on behalf of tho lionising group. Completo support was given tho City Council in refusing to permit tho erection of tho flats, tho group's report stating that thoy wore highly undesirable from economic, hygienic and social considerations.

Strong views woro expressed zipon tho schome from the social wolfara aspect. Lower paid workers now in hostels and private houses would be tomptod to sharo tho cost of a flat in order to bo free from tho very wise restrictions imposed upon them for their own good.

" Theso restrictions are not irksome," the report statod. " Tho hostels not only give good valuo for money received, but allay tho anxiety of country parents who feel that thoir young folk are safo amid tho city's temptations wlien they livo at these places of accommodation. Tho proposed scheme docs not malco any specific provision for supervision of tenants from tho moral viewpoint. Tho committee is of opinion that buildings of tho proposed character should bo designed for accommodation of one sex only."
