Records Department, was climbing a dark staircase in his ofiico at the Palais dc Justice lie met a man armed with a revolver, who shot him in the head, heart and back. The murderer was escaping when bo was seized by three inspectors. He says his name is Joseph Philiponnet, but lie refused to give any explanation of his action except that ho acted after an expert report by M, Baylc. "I killed a dishonest'man," he said.

M. Baylo was a famous scientist. He. organised the anthropometrical service of the police force.
