MANUKAU COUNTY.
UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.
The Manukau County Council met yesterday morning, the chairman, Mr. l'\ M. Waters, presiding.
Intimation was received that tho Public Works Department would be able to employ a party of workmen on unemployment relief work at an "early date. Tho work would consist, of widening "and improving roads in the Wairoa riding. By way of assisting, the engineer said lio was endeavouring to have the necessary adjustment of boundary fences and engineering survey work effected. The engineer reported that 28 " school signs had"been ordered, and would shortly be available for erection at 14 schools in the county. . .. The need of reconditioning portions 'oi, Ihumatao Parade, which gives access to the Auckland Aero Club's establishment; on tho Manukau Beach Estate, was stressed by tho engineer in his report.. Ho said the road was showing signs of heavy wear, and tho. extent- nnd cost of tho work called for early consideration. A latter was received from the Main Highways Board advising the payment of £346 14*3 2d to tho council's account, t,o 1)3 credited as follow sPakuranga riding, £ls 7s 6d; Papakura riding, £7B lis lid; Turnnga riding, £252 14s 9d. The Public Works Department- wrote advising payment of £ll2 19s 8d to the council's account.
The opinion that white lines at road intersections were more effective and safer than traffic domes was expressed in a letter received from the Auckland Automobilo Association. Mr. C. S. McCallum said he considered that, great credit was duo to Messrs. F. M. Waters, .T. R. Page, county engineer, and. W. J. Lopdell, contractor, for their activities in connection with the erection ot tho new bridge over tho Papakura Stream. . . An apology from representatives of tne Otahuhu railway workshops for having, omitted to request the chairman of tho council to open the new workshops was received. Messrs. S. W. Houso and S. Rickards said they had been'•approached by representatives of the workshops, who. had espla'ned that the on,,^ ion was due to a confusion of the boundaries. • apology and the explanation wore accepted..
