BIG-GAME FISHING.

QUESTION OF CRUELTY.

VIEW OF AUCKLAND SOCIETY,

[by telegraph.—OWN cokhespondent. ]

DUNEDIN, Tuesday

A letter was received by the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals this afternoon from tho Auckland 'Society, in tho course of which tho lattor body set out its views on the use of the triple hook for swordfishing, and also the use of live bait.

With regard to the triple hook the lettei 1 pointed out that the views of Sir. Zano Grey and those of the animal societies were diametrically opposed. Mr. Grey looked at tho matter from the socalled sporting point of view, whereas the societies were concerned with tho degree of cruelty involved in the practice of playing the nsh. ' The letter stated that there could be no question that cruelty existed, but the Auckland committee was of opinion that the time was not opportune for tho societies in Now Zealand to take action in the matter.

On the question of live bait, the Auck land committee was of opinion that this should bo prohibited, and that efforts should bo mado to secure the abolition ot tho practice. Mr. W. F. Sligo, tho chairman, said ho thought the northern society had taken a very sensible view of tho matter. Ho agreed that it was a cruel practice to use livo bait. It was decided to endorse the views of tho Auckland society.
