POPULARITY OF CONSIGNING,

Tho latest circular issued by the Dairy Produce Board shows that shipments of both butter and cheese from Now Zealand during August were substantially greater than in tho corresponding month of last year.

Shipments of butter totalled 3206 tons, compared with 1350 tons in August, 1928. It is noticeable that of the exported total the amount sent to Canadian ports is proportionately far greater than in the corresponding month of last season. Of the shipments to tho United Kingdom, 73 per cent, was consigned and 27 per cent, sold f.o.b. Cheese shipments over the same pcrioa amounted to 2897 tons, compared with 167 tons in August, 1928. Of the cheese destined to tho United Kingdom, 76 per cent, was consigned and 24 per cent, sold f.o.b. The position respecting Australian shipments has been exactly tho rcvcrsa of the New Zealand experience for August.The Commonwealth's exporls for the month, with the figures for August, 1928, in parentheses, arc as follows: —Butter: 646 tons (1205 tons). Cheese: 20 ton 3 (226 tons). Shipments of butter from the Argcntino during August amounted to 18 tons compared with 307 tons in August, .1928. [BX TELEGRAPH.; —OWN COBRESPONDENT.} CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The third annual report and balancesheet of the South Island Motor Union Insurance Association discloses a satisfactory year's working. The report states tho premium income, less returns, refunds and reinsurances, amounted to £16,439, ns against £10,236 last year, while- losses, less reinsurance and recoveries, amounted lo £3716, as against £2616 in the previous year. The net result of,-tile years operations, after making provision for a reserve for unexpired risks and all other liabilities, shows a surplus of £5242. The total funds at the end of the year were £20,945, which, after placing £9158 to reserve for unexpired risks and allowing for other liabilities, leaves a credit balance of £9128, which has been placed to general reserve. The result of the year's operations disclosed such a healthy position, says tho report, that tho directors found that still further benefits could with .safety be given to policy holders. It has been decided to give a rebate bonus of 5 per cent, on all premiums paid since the inception—May 1, 1926. to June 30, 1929—t0 all members who had policies in forco at that date, and to give as a further benefit an increased deduction from premiums where no claim has been made during the preceding twelve, months.

The annual sale of pedigree Jersey bulla held by members of ihe Franklin Jersey Breeders' Club opened to-day. A total of 184, bulla ' were catalogued. There was n, good attendance of buyers and a good demand was maintained throughout,. Of tho 93 bulls listed to be offered to-day. thero wore only a few which did not come forward. While some failed to reach ■ the reserve, 76 were sold under tlio hammer. at prices ranging up to 45 guineas. This sum. w.as paid by Mr. Ales. Cathcart. of Onewhoro. for a ten-year-old bull, General, entered by Mr..Albert J. of Wniau Pa. Forty guineas was Paid by Mr. W. Hewitt for a two-year-old bull.
