CADETS ON LINERS.
HARBOUR BOAT RACES.
The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Hororata and the Federal Line steamer Northumberland, now at Auckland, carry a large number of cadets, who aro training to become officers. Yesterday afternoon the cadets hold boat races with the ships' boats. The principal event was a chnllonge race between cadets from the two vessels, and the result was a victory for the Northumberland. In the cup race between the two crows at Wellington, the Hororata's crew was the winner. Yesterday's race was keenly contested, and the issuo was in doubt until nearly tho end. Tho course was from the eastern end of Victoria Wharf, Devonport, to a line between Central Wharf and Queen's Wharf, whero tho two vessels were berthed. The distance was miles, and the Northumberland's boat won by a narrow margin of three-quarters of a boat's length. The race was watched by the officers and cadets on both steamers, and also by a largo number of spectators on the wharves. Tho winning crew was loudly applauded and tho coxswain was chaired by bis fellow cadets to the Northumberland. Two other races were held earlier in the day by cadets on the Northumberland. A race between boats manned by crews of first-year cadets in the port and starboard watches was rowed from Sheerlegs Wharf. Devonport, to the Central Wharf, a distance of one mile. Tho starboard watch won by li minutes. Over the same course a race was rowed between crews of junior cadets from the port and starboard watches. The starboard watch was again the winner.
