TRAMWAY EXTENSIONS.
100 MEN TO BE EMPLOYED.
WORK AT END OF MONTH,
When tho first instalment of hardwood sleepers, required by the Auckland Transport Board in connection with the tramway extensions to Point Chevalier and Dominion Road, arrives toward tho end of the month, work will be found for 100 men. A statement to this effect was made by the chairman of the board, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, at the meeting yesterday.
A letter ivas received from the Auckland Trades and Labour Council expressing regret at the board's decision to let the work of excavation by contract instead of carrying it out by its own staff on day labour.
"The position is entirely misunderstood," remarked Mr. Allum. "The contract is not affecting the number of men at all." He added that* a considerable number had already been engaged in/connection with the building of the new tramcars and 100 more would be required when the sleepers arrived. Mr. M. J. Coyle suggested that the report recently furnished the board by Mr. A. E. Ford showing the comparative cost of day labour and contract work should bo forwarded to the council, and this course was adopted.
