No rider has yot been secured for Th Lover in tho Avondalo Cup. Ail attcmr was made to secure tho successful souther apprentice, K. Voitre, but he is required fo Piuthair, who is trained by his employe R. E. Hatch. The Lover has been workin very satisfactorily and is an improve horse sinco he rnced unsuccessfully las month. In tho hands of a capable lighl weight he might run a solid race with th minimum in his coming enslavement. Tho Auckland horseman. E. Stanway. wh has been attached to A. E. Neale's stabl at Bulls for several mouths, is returning t rido at the Avotidale and Auckland Sprin Meetings, whore he will steer Ncale' charges, Elysianor and Kilburn. in jumpin events in which they compete. R. S. Dauby, who recently returned fro Sydney, is coming to Auckland to do tl ' riding for J 11. JefTerd's stable at the Avo: dale Sluing Meeting. Bagby anticipati | being able to rido on 8.5. No doubt h services will be in demand for other trainer TWO-YEAR-OLD WINNER. SIMBA A SMART COLT. The honour of being the first two-year-oh winner of the season in tho Dominion be longs to Simba ip consequenco of his victor in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui. Th youngster was responsible for a pleasini performanoo in jumping out of the barrie smartly and winning handsomely afte: losing some ground in running wide rouni the home turn. Simba is o brown colt b: Psychology from Tressida and iB therefor a half-brother to Runnymede and Raasay who were both good two-year-olds. With little more experience it is probable that h. will improve quite a lot and. though h' took a second longer than Speed Light di( in winning the race last year when th< ground was . probably slightly slowe than last week, there is every rea son for his connections to view hi future prospects very hopefully. Unfor tunately ho is not engaged in eithe the Avondalo Stakes or the Welcome Stake; and we will have to wait until a littli later to secure a further line on his form It is understood that he was taken out o the Wecome Stakes only last week and evi dently his trainer does not want the col to bo too seriously toxed at present. FLYING STAKES HANDICAP. SMART SPRINTERS ENGAGED. There is an array of smart sprinters ir tho Flying Stakes Handicap to bo run or the first day of tho Avondalo meeting and il is a race likely to cause backers considerable thought. To sa7 the least it is decidedly open and whatever wins will have to register a good performance. On his running at Wanganui, where he ran a fine raco considering that it was his first for some months. Silvermine may be the pick of the two top-weights, although Benzora is a fine sprinter who will relish the long straight. Gold Mioney's latest form has been so consistently good that she must bo treated with great respect and in her present condition she may beat most of those within close rango of her in tho weights. Lady Quex made a respectable showing at Wanganui and may do better here, while Lucy Rose, Awarero, Flying Juliet and Kingfield would beat most of tho3e lower down if ready to repeat their best. An improving hack like Knightliko, who was unlucky not to win last week, might bo a possibility and tho same might be said of Te Atiawa. Eaglet has two wins in as many starts to her credit this season and she should make her presence felt with a handy weight like 7.10, because she is fit and ha 3 plenty of brilliance. At present Gold Money, Silvermine and l Eaglet are fancied and unless tho final gallops bring some of the othera into prominenco they may be tho favourites, THE AVONDALE CUP. FINE CONTEST EXPECTED. With an excellent acceptance of fifteen tho prospects of a particularly interesting contest in the Avondalo Cup are very bright. Unless the weather sots in wet the track should be firmer than usual at this period of the yoar and it is to bo hoped that tho condition will remain favourable for a heavy track might mean a few defections. Taken collectively tho field engaged is a solid ono and the raco is not going to bo easy to win. There is a strong disposition in many quarters to favour Historic and southern racing mon are extremely keen on his chance. His winter form was good and it is likely to bo in his favour that he will be thoroughly ready for his task. Another with fairly recent winning form is Paddon and it is anticipated that ho will bo fit to display his best, bo that ho must certainly he respected. Star Stranger may find it difficult to beat these horses at tho weights at this stage and thero is a doubt whether Princo Humphrey will be quito seasoned enough to run out a mile and a-quarter successfully at present. There is no doubt that tho "Prince" has retained his brilliancy and it seems only a matter cf his keeping sound to win good races this season. It is probable that he will be improved by his two runs over sprint courses lately and it will not surpriso if ho makes a solid showing. Lack of recent racing may be against Prodico, but F. Loomb has a knack of having his charges ready early nnd she should raco prominently if produced in tho right condition. High Pitch and Singleton read beat of those about the middle of tho handicap and it is likely to bo to their advantage that they are in fino order after winter racing. Hydo Park may ho ill tho better for a race, although ho iB well forward, and a better prospect may bo Piuthair, who gave evidenco of returning to form by running second at her last start. AH the horses near tho minimum aro capable of running ten furlongs solidly under light impostß and several of these may Make matters interesting. It is. indeed, an •>pen race and few of the candidates can be dismissed from calculations. Fancies ore, therefore, almo3t sure to take a wide range and no doubt the final gallops and tho coalition of tho track will havo a bearing on ;ho final summing-up. At present Historic, Paddon and Piuthair are fancied and they may continue in popular favour until the day. REGISTRATION OVERSIGHT. Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received September 16, 8.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 10. Mr. H. T. Hume, owner of the New Zeaand horse Teri, wan fined £lO by tho Australian Jockey Club for failing to register lis horse after arrival. The stewards found that the nonregistration of Teri wa3 an oversight, but hey decided to deprive the owner of third ilace gained by the horse in the Campsie tlandicap at tho Canterbury races on September 7. They directed that tho prize noney should be refunded. The jockey, W. Cook, appeared before ;ho committee of the Australian Jockey Ulub. It was alleged that ho broke m arrangement to ride Crucis in the Chelmsford Stakes. Cook rodo Mollison, ;he winner of that race. Cook was oxonorated. Tho trouble was 3ue to a misunderstanding.
