WATERFRONT ROAD.

FINISHING ORAKEI SECTION.

TRAFFIC IN NOVEMBER.

COST TO JUNE 30, £201,256

CONSTRUCTION OF BRIDGES. Notification that the waterfront road would be opened in November for traffic from Campbell's Point to the sewage tanks at Orakei was received by tho Auckland City Council last evening from the acting-city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, replying to a question asked by Miss A. Bastcn at the previous meeting.

Mr. Tyler said that the section of the road named could be used for passenger transport after the opening. The extension of 64 chains from Orakei to Mission Bay would not be ready for traffic until the end of next year. The section to be opened this year was two miles 25 chains in length, the total distance from the chief post office to the sewage tanks being three miles 23 chains. The permanent bridges would not be completed until next May or June, but in the meantime traffic would be carried by the two temporary structures. Roadway Fjfty Feet Wide. The permanent bridges will be 300 ft. and 160 ft. in length respectively, and there will be a 40ft. decking between two 10ft. paths. The width of the surfaced road will be 50ft. with paths of 20ft. and 10ft. iri addition. The formation of the roadway has been practically completed from Campbell s Point to Mission Bay. The total expenditure on the waterfront road' to June 30 was £201,256, inclusive of the City Council's share of £132,544. Subsidiary works were the construction of Ihe Whakatakataka Bay Road for 28 chains to give access to the Orakei Block. This would bring the total cost up to £317,000 for the first portion of the scheme, the city quota being £200,000. Request By Yacht-Owners. In connection with the permanent bridge construction, the advisability of considering yachting needs was brought before the council in a memorandum from the Mayor, Mr. C. Baildon. He said that a deputation of boat-owners had asked for tho construction of the bridge near Hobson Point in such a way that launches and small yachts would have access to the water enclosed by the road embankment. This would necessitate raising the bridge to allow about 9ft. of clearance. The additiontl cost was estimated at £BOO, and the Mayor expected that the Government would contribute one-third. He personally considered the matter deserving of serious consideration. The question was referred to the Works Committee for a report.
