THE DOOR OF HOPE.

WORK AMONG GIRLS.

NEED FOR MORE ASSISTANCE.

Satisfaction with tho work for girls carried on by tho Door of Hope Association at Salem Houso in Cook Street was expressed in the committee's report presented at tho annual meeting of tho association yesterday. Tho chairman, Mr. W. R. Wilson, presided over a good attendance of members.

The work of the homo had been carried 011 very effectively during the year under tho management of Mrs. John Graham. Tho committee was satisfied that tho 23 girls under tho caro of the homo wore receiving tlio training and Christian influence that the original founders intended when the home was initiated 33 years ago.

Unfortunately for tho financial sido of the association tho work was carried on too quietly and sufficient support had not beon received from friends who were regular supporters in tho past. Consequently, expenditure had exceeded tho income by £369 18s 9d during the past year and subscriptions and donations had fallen to the low figure of £79 20s. A very definite effort to remedy this must bo made during tho coming year, tho committee felt. Since tho end of the financial year tho association had received word that a legacy of £IOOO had been left it under the will of the late Mrs. Duffus. This would enable tho greater part of tho bank overdraft of £llOB to bo written oft . . Tho Door of Hope Association, tho report stated, was unique in Auckland, in that it was doing a purely preventive work jimong girls and should have a strong appeal to the community. Tho following members of the committee retired by rotation and -wcro rejected Mrs. H. R. Jenkins, Miss A. 11. Baker anfl Mr. W. R. Wilson. Miss B. Carnachan and Mr. C. F. Warren wcro also elected. Mr. 11. W. Shovo was roappointed auditor. During tho year, tho report of the matron stated, the cottage hostel for tho oldor girls had been extended to accommodate 30. A number of the girls were apprenticed to various trades under careful supervision and others wcro attending primary schools. Interesting addresses dealing with tho work of tho home were given by Mr. E. C. Cuttcn, 'S.M., and tho Rev. L. B. Fletcher.
