ALLEGED THEFT IN SYDNEY
MAN AND WOMAN REMANDED.
EXTRADITION SOUGHT.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —I'RESS ASSOCIATION". ] CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday. An unusual point was raised in tho Police Court when a man and a woman were jointly charged with the theft of trunks, suitcases and clothes, valued at £2OO, the. property of an Australian whoso name was tho samo as that of the femalo accused, who said that 110 was her husband.
The chief detective, in asking for <1 remand, said that the man and the woman stole the goods in Sydney and ran awav to New Zealand.
Counsel asked for the temporary sup pression of their names, as the pair had intended to settle down in New Zealand. He also asked for bail.
"Have 1 the power to grant bail in an extradition case such as this V asked the magistrate. The chief detective opposed bail. "Wo have no proof that this woman is the complainant's wife," lie said. The Magistrate: I do not like bail in these extradition cases. The name will be suppresed in the meantime. Accused vero remanded until August 29.
