f QUESTION OF FINANCE.
HIGHWAYS BOARD'S SUBSIDY.
" The Main Highways Board is subsidising tho cost of both maintenance and construction on a very large mileage of feeder roads," stated tho chairman of tho Main Highways Board, Mr. F. W. Furkert, in a reply to a resolution of the Farmers' Union, urging that the time had arrived when contributions should be made to feeder roads —apart from main loads—to main highways by tho Highways Board.
"You'are probably aware," continued "Mr. Furkcrt, "that there are 10,000 miles of main highways on which tho Main 7 Highways Board is paying a subsidy for ~ fcotb construction and maintenance. A
certain mileage of theso highways are competitive with the railways, but a very (urge mileage, probably tho greater portion, are feeder roads. The original highway declarations were made in 1924, when about 6000 miles of roads :-'.,wero declared to be main highways. At that time in selecting tho roads ... to be declared tho board had regard to the amount of feeder traffic carried by the various roads. Further, when tho considering the additional 4000 miles of main highways which were <lcscared in .1928, n, consequence of tho intraduction of the Motor Spirits Taxation Act, feeder roads in practically all cases . preforcnce,". .
