NEW TRAM SHELTERS.

SITE AT CHIEF POST OFFICE

PROPOSAL FOR CLASS ROOF

PROVISION AT OTHER POINTS

Roveral new tram shelters are to lio erected shortly by the Transport Board for the convenience of intending passengers who at present are obliged to wait for trams in the open. Tho most elaborate one it 1 is proposed to erect in front of tho chief post office', whero hundreds of people cotjgreguto during the course of a day, waiting for both trams and buses.

Permission lias first to bo obtained from tho City Council, which is now considering the board's plan. Tho suggestion is to put up a steel-framo structure carrying a glass roof, which would cover tho whole of tho footpath in front of the post office steps. Similar shelters are to bo seen in somo of the Continental cities and provide completo protection from tho rain without shutting out tho sun. Assurances aro given that tho structure will not be out of keeping with tho architectural design of tho post offico and the general appearance of Queen Street. Tho next shelter in point of interest will be erected at tho intersection of Mountain Road with Khyber Pass, where a great many peoplo wait for trams throughout tho day. A few years ago tho City Council acquired a corner property at this point, razed tho buildings on it and converted the corner into a small reserve in order to improvo tho visibility for motor traffic. As tho construction of a tram shelter upon this roservo would at onco hinder tho vision of motorists emerging from Mountain Road and reconstitute the corner a danger spot, tho suggestion is that tho sheltor should be put on the eastern side of Mountain Road, outside thej Lion Brewery. Hero again the City Council's permission has to bo obtained and the owners of tho brewery consulted. Tho intention is to erect a brick and tilo structure which will present desirable architectural lines.

A shelter in timber is to bo erected on tho Mount Eden route between Esplanado and Edenvalo Roads and another one will bo erected on tho Onehunga routo at Epsom Avenue. It is also intended to remove tho existing tram shelter at the intersection of Orakei Road with Rcmuera Road to a point on tho other side of Remnera Road (tho inward journey side), opposite St. Aidan's Church. In its present position the shelter is considered to obstruct the vision of motorists emerging from Orakr< lload.

In each caso tho local bodies concerned have been asked for the necessary permission to erect tho shelters and tho adjacent property owners have boon consulted.
