SAFETY OF SUEZ CANAL.
ALARM IN THE DOMINIONS
MR. MacDONALD SURPRISED
(Received August 2. fi.25 p.m.)
United Service LONDON. Aug 1 A committee of the Cabinet has drafted a treaty between Britain and Egypt. This wTll Ijo submitted to a full meeting of tho Cabinet, shortlv.
A rep'.t from Cairo suggests that the text of the draft may bo published there sonu.
'l'he Prime Minister. Mr Ramsay MacDonald. says he considers the proposed treat,v would provide adequate safeguards for th interest* of the Empire. lie believes Australia and New Zealand will bo satisfied with adequate guarantees for tho safety of die Suez Canal.
Apparently Mr. Mar Donald is surprised at the alarm express"d in Australia and Nev>' Zealand about the Suoz Cannl as ho makes it clear that Britain is no less dependent upon its absolute safety. Accordingly tho Labour Government never for a moment intended to introduce any legislation to challenge that safety.
