MILLIONS IN WAGES.
DISPUTES IN AUSTRALIA.
COAL POSITION SERIOUS. SYDNEY, Aug. 1. As a result of tho timber workers' strike and tho stoppage of work on the northern coalfields, both of which have been in progress six months, workers throughout New South Wales have lost nrarly £2,000,000 in wages. Tho two disputes have rendered idle 30,000 men. Unemployment relief has cost the Government £IO,OOO a week. The unions have collected £70,000 in levies. Further trouble is expected by the gas companies at Newcastle. They are experiencing difficulty in securing gasmalting coal.
The Government's stacks at Port Waratah, from which coal iE obtained, aro sadly depleted. Only about one month's supply is left. A critical situation may ariso unless a new source of supply is found shortly.
EMPLOYERS' DECISION
TERRORISTS' ASSOCIATES. NO FURTHER RE-EMPLOYMENT. (Received August 1. 8.45 p m.) MELBOURNE. Aug. 1. The Melbourne timber merchants have refused to re-employ a number of strikers who are said to bo actively associated with the gatig of men who have tried to terrorise volunteer workers. The number thus rejected is 700. The Timbet Workers' Union is attempt<ng to have these men reinstated.
