THE DEVONPORT SHIELD,' FIRST SERIES OF MATCHES. TRIAL GAME AT REMUERA. The Dcvonport l Shield competition of tlia Auckland Hockey Association will commence to-morrow. Owing to the close matches in the Davis Cup competition which resulted in a tie between Soinerville and St. Luke's, another keen series of games is anticipated. All senior matches will start, at 1(60. North Shore will play Somerville on the No. 1 ground at Remuera, St. Luke's will meek University on the No. 2 ground and Mount Eden will try conclusions with Epiphany on the No. 8 ground An A and B trial match will also be decided on the No. 1 ground, commencing at 3.15. The tHird round of the Waipa Hockey Association's Empson Cud competition wa* commenced yesterday, when Paterangi A defeated Waratahs (Te Awamutu), at Paterangi, by 8 goals to 0, and Paterangi B defeated Ramblers by _6 goals to 2. Waipa had a distinct honour accorded it last Saturday when its sole representative, Len. Spiers, in the New Zealand test team, was elected captain for the match against the Australians. He and his brother Bert were the only two members of last year'a New Zealand team in Australia selected from minor unions. In the coming test match at Auckland Lett, and another brother. Phil.
