FARMERS WITHOUT OATS.

POSITION IN NORTH OTAGO. A number of North Oingo farmers just row find themselves in the strange position of not having enough oats to meet tiieir own requirements. Moreover, there are practically no oats for sale in the district. Several explanations are given. The area sown with oats was smaller than usual, farmers having come to tho conclusion that the market is too precarious to offer any encouragement to grow this cereal. They say that for tho past four years tlio prices, except for spasmodic flutters, iinvo been unprofitable, and that the demand in tho Dominion has been constantly on tho decrease owing to (ho growing use of tractors, which has rendered tho position so uncertain as to render growing of oats even a doubtful speculation. Then a disastrous hailstorm completely destroyed a good number of the oat crops, while what was threshed gave a low average yield.
