THE MERRY MONTH OF MAY.

SUMMER FURS. DEMURE POKE BONNETS. rsrECXAI, TO N.z. HERALD.— COPYRIGHT. J LONDON. Juno 1, 1929. In tho merry month of May, Pans is usually a study of summer furs. Often the weather is in keeping, but this year wo arc enjoying tho most perfect spring sunshine and warmth. 'liiis, howevor, makes no difference to tho fur vogue, for tho modern woman never puts "her furs aside, and, indeed, welcomes any now mode that has a suggestion of fur—even in tho summer weather. Fur coats, slipped over their dresses aro still to bo seen in spito of tho brilliant weather, and new models in light weight fur wero shown in all tho spring collections. Many of tho smooth furs aro treated exactly ns though they were cloth. Thero are brown and beige shaved lamb coats with scarf collars, which tie and drape, in three-quarter length, and just as supple as cloth.

Pony skin is used most cleverly; all the hardness has been taken out of it. and it has a wonderful silky appearance. Indeed, so lovely aro these new coats that few womon who can afford it will bo without their summer fur coats this year. What is moro useful than a beige summer ermino coat for evoning, and a brown shaved lamb or pony skin for day wear ? Tho luxury-loving woman can chooso a coat of creamy-coloured broadtail or a pale grey shaved lamb trimmed with grey suede. I have seen exquisite coats of white broadtail trimmed with grey astrakhan, and a groy shaved lamb with a luxurious collar of matching chinchilla. Tho charm of white ermino for evoning is irresistible, and now it can bo trimmed with its own flounces, which fall as limply as chiffon, and tho whole wrap might bo of velvet, it is so soft and drapable. Fur trimmcu coats are very fashionable for day wear, but at tho moment thero aro not so many seen for tho evening. Skull caps in all sorts of pinched forms, aro correct, tight turbans, and demuro poko-bonnets. with clinging coats or draped capos. Theso aro relieved at the neck with costly fui collars, liugo cuffs, or a silver fox tie, a bunch of white gardenias, or other beige grey or wliito flowers. Thero may be a dull suede pochette or bag, and suede or crept- do chine shoes—suggesting tho depest mourning—but with tho consoling touch of white, beigo, grey, or yellow Other outfits of greeo or chocolate or brown look ordinary besides theso dull soft black costumes. If you would look really distinguished, chooso this arresting and becoming costume You can have it relieved with a touch of shiny satin and patent leather shoes, it you" wish, with stockings to match your gloves. Gloves are always important at this time of the year, and there is a fascinating variety of colour and design. The favourite shape is the gauntlet pullon with elastic strap hidden in the glove in front of tho wrist. Others have cuffs appliqued in softly contrasting colours, and are held by mother o' pearl buckle or plaited strap of finely cut thongs of leather in tho same colour ns the gloves. Cuff links in silver trimmed blue enamel give a smart finish to a pair ol wido cuffed cloves in light pastel shade with insets of blue leather.
