EXTRAORDINARY ACCIDENT
CUTS THROUGH PONTOONS

LONDON. July 10. An unusual and cosily marine accident occurred between Tilbury and Southend. The Aberdeen Commonwealth (White Star) liner Hobsons Bay developed a defect in her steering gear as she was outward bound and her course was suddenly altered.
The steamer rut through a number of anchored pontoons and collided with a jetty, which crumpled up like matchwood. Two of tlie pontoons were sunk. '1 he total damage is estimated at <ESO,LOO.
Six men who were working on the pontoons saw the danger and reached the shore before the collision.
The Hobsons Bay was not damaged, filie was brought to a standstill and then headed for the fairway. Her steering year was subsequently adjusted.
