LOST PROPERTY.
ANNUAL RAILWAY AUCTION.
MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION.
The tangible results of a year's forgetfulness and carelessness by patrons of the Railway Department in the Auckland district make a formidable and impressive display. All these lost and strayed articles of almost infinite variety were gathered together yesterday in a goods-s!aed near tho vehicular ferry landing at Mechanics' Bay for the annual auction sale. Tho event inevitably attracted very keen interest among certain sections of tho public who enjoy taking a risk on the off-chance of a real bargain. Among the masses of sticks, umbrellas, hats, overcoats, swags and .handbags of all sorts thftt constituted tho main stock in trade, such exhibits as a 10-gallon keg of beer and a marquee attracted special attention. The bv-stander could not help speculating also bow it was that so many cripples came to forget their crutches in (his part of the world. Purses, suitcases, boxes and dress-baskets suggested attractive possibilities within, and the crowd was not loth to invest on the chanco of making a valuable discovery. Tho sale, carried out under ihe direction of Messrs. Robert Can- and Son, sped swiftly on to the accompaniment of good humoured banter, and there was every reason to believe that (ho net result will be satisfactory to the auctioneer and to tho Railway Department.
