As a result of a collision between two motor-cars on the Great South Road, between t liCi Harp of Erin and Penrose, on tho morning of Juno 6, a prosecution for dangerous driving was brought in tho Police Court yesterday against George Broom, the driver of one of tho cars. Defendant, who was represented- by Mr. Wilkie, denied the charge. The driver of the oilier car, Sydney Edwin Christmas, stated lie was driving toward Penroso along the Great South Road, and slowed down to turn into a gateway on the opposito sido of the road. Prior to beginning the turn he looked to his rear and gave the correct signal. As he turned, when he had reached tho opposito sido of tho road, defendant's car crashed into his, carrying iL along the edgo of the footpath. Defendant's car then ran with all four wheels along the footpath, careering across the road to tho opposito kerb, a distance he estimated at from CO to 70 feet.

Two men who were riding on a truck behind Christmas' car gave corrobative evidence.

Defendant's defence was that he misunderstood Christmas' signal, which was incorrectl>v given. Ho had taken it to mean that the other car was going to stop, while he was misled by tho fact that the car had also drawn in to tho loft of the road to make a sweep into the gateway. He submitted that Christmas was negligent in two respects, not giving tho proper signal and not looking back beforo turning. Stating that the evidence of witnesses showed that Christmas had given a proper signal, and had taken duo precautions, the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, imposed a fino of £l.
