MOST SUCCESSFUL YEAR.

PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. The Auckland Military Sports Association hold its annual presentation of trophies ceremony in the Lewis Eady Hall last, evening, Lieutenant-Colonel J. E. Duigan, chief staff officer of the Northern Command, presiding over a, large assemble

Lieutenant-Colonel Duigan expressed the association's regret that the president, Brigadier H. 1!. Potter, was not able lo be present owing to illness. An apology for absence was received from MajorGeneral K. Young, officer commanding the New Zealand Forces.

The association encouraged a love of military sports and recreation, LieutenantColonel Duigan said. Its slogan was " the greatest good for the greatest number." The various activities of the movement were constantly growing, and far-reaching results had been obtained in the field of athletics. The current year had been the most successful one since the inception of tho association. Three hundred boys had taken part in the boxing tournaments, 600 in the tabloid sportS, 300 in the athletic championships, and 200 in the swimming events. These figures did not include boys who had been receiving instruction in the various branches of sport. A tribute lo the work of Mr. J. Carlaw, the chairman of the management committee, who was not. able lo attend, was paid by Major W. I''. C. Fiunis, regimental district commander. He pointed out that competitions were held both for territorials and for senior cadets.

The prizes were presented by Lieuten-ant-Colonel Duigan. The trophies, which amounted in value to over £L!2O, included useful articles, such as handbags, clothing and toilet requisites. The Carlaw Challenge Shield, for territorials, was won by the First Battalion, Auckland Regiment, and the New Zealand HEtiAt.D trophy, for the senior cadets, by St. Stephen's School for Maori Boys.

An enjoyable programme of part-songs and hakas was given hv pupils of St. Stephen's School, solos were contributed by Miss Cofield and Mr. G. Collodge, and orchestral numbers were played.
