ECONOMIC DEPRESSION.
POSITION IN AUSTRALIA.
IMPROVEMENT EXPECTED
(Received July 9, 8."5 p.m.) CANBERRA, July 0. The Common wealth Statistician, Mr. C. Wickens, states that although Australia is passing through a period of economic depression there are signs of the position improving. The latest trade figures for the financial year ended June 30 indicate that there will be a balance of exports over imports of about £5,000,000. The migration figures were lower last year than for years past. The birth-rate also was lower, Ihe death-rato was higher. Mr. Wickens remaiks that periods of depression always arc accompanied bv a lower birth-rate and a higher death-rate.
