WELLINGTON MEETING.

WORK ON HEAVY TRACKS.

BLACK DUKE SPRINTS WELL.

GLENDOWIE IN FORM. [IIV TELEGUAI'II. —OWN COIUtESI'ONDEN'T.] WELLINGTON, Monday. After steady rain for over 21 hours the weather cleared at Trentham this morning at about Li o'clock Tho damage is now done to the tracks, which aro rain-soaked", and tho going cannot fail to bo but very heavy for Wednesday Tho work was dono tb"3 morninr undo' unpleasant conditions and few horses on the tlat went at moro than solid half pace. Proceedings woro enlivened by a littlo jumping Black Duke beat Mart Mint over half a milo on the grass in 51s, Black Duko ro veiling in '.he ground. Tanerin finished well clear of Ohinemuri at the end of six furlongs on tho grass in 1.2G Taneriri appeared to have the track to his liking. Maori B<">y and Justify both hit out well when sprinting home at, tho end of their gallop. Gold Cure and Juggle both showed that the conditions did not come umisa to them when striding out over a round. Paddon is causing his connections some anxiety by a doubtful locking off fetlock joint which is much enlarged Ho does not appear to favour tho leg and hit out strongly in a round on the Bind. At tlio same timo tho appcaranco of tho leg is disturbing. What may stand to him is that ho is a fn horse Taranto strode over half a milo well on the sand in 50s Radiatc's Good Prospects. Matu was given a sprint over half a milo and pulled up well. Bonrose pleased by tho way sho handled tho going, and looka a very fit mare. Radiate was given several rounds of solid pace work on the sand and bit out well. Ho appears to be in excellent order in spite of his reported light preparation, and should run a good race in the Wellington Steeplechase. Comical has not worked better for some time than he did this morning Ho was not asked to go fast, but the soft track was obviously quite to his liking, and ho put plenty ot heart into his work. Glendowie (Stanway). Brigadier Bill (Corlett) and Fabriano (O'Connor) went out to school over tho five fences on the course proper Glendowie out-jumped Brigadier Bill at every fenct and again gavo a masterly display Fabriano jumped the first fence badly and blundered at the second, dislodging his rider. Subsequently he was remounted and completed his task, but his showing was poor All threo did strong pace work afterwards Overhaul (A Hobson) jumped three hurdles in the centre of the courso. Ho slipped into tho first two, but extricated himself cleverly, and it was quito a pleasing display Ho looks in good order. Bright Land was on the courso, but was only trotted about in tho centro. He still appears a triflo soro. An effort is to be made to get him to the post for the Highweight Handicap on the second day, but his prospects aro not bright. Conditions Suit Billiklns.

Billikins showed plenty of dash running down from the half-mile post. Sho wa3 another suited by the ground. Sudden Storm, Full Feather, Hurly Burly, Amorist, Taboo and Fairy Herald wero othefs to work not fast but. satisfactorily, with the track suiting them. Pari who will bo ridden by A. Tinker in the Woburn Handicap on Wednesday, worked along well. Tho Masher, who was brought to Trentham by R. Alexander, is to bo handed over to A. Quinlan to bo schooled as a hurdler. Koauati (A. Jenkins), Boomeiday (Syme) and Sir Moment (Stanway) went out to schoul over the five steeplechase fences. Boomerday outjumped Koanau at every fence, but Koauati showed more pace on the flat. Ho looks to havo done plenty of work and may play his part well on Wednesday. Boomerday gave a finished display of jumping. Sir Moment was always in the rear and was overshadowed by the other pair. Tinokoa strode out as if ho liked it when running six furlongs. Waltzei gave u better display than Just John over three hurdles in tho centre of tho course. Waltzer is a proved mudlark, and his jumping has obviously improved a good deal. Arikiwai aud Marsh am were withdrawn from their first day engagements at Trentham at 10.15 a.m. to-day. CANTERBURY NOTES. [iIY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] CiIEISTCIIURCH. Monday. It is not likely that Lord Ranald will continue his engagement in the Grand National Steeplechase, but will probably bo raced in the shorter events at next month's meeting. Arikiwai's trouble has been traced to a splint which has developed below tho knee, necessitating his absenco from tho active brigade for a while. F. D. Jones, therefore, did not make tho proposed trip with Arikiwai and Morsham to Wellington, and it is very doubtful if Arikiwai will uccornpany the team to Sydney. Limerick would not have to win many of tho forthcoming woight-for-age races in Australia to overhaul Gloaming's record of stake money. lli3 total to date is £37,'J73. or £'5127 short of Gloaming's figures. During the season lust closing Limerick as a five-year-old won XC3OS, against Gloaming's total of £5030 at the same ago. As a six-year-old Gloaming collected £5805. at seven years £1233, and nt eight years £2205. Solrose, formerly trained at Wingatui, is now attached to N. C. Price's stable. Sho is due to race again at the Grand National meeting.
