OBITUARY.

MR. A. C. POAD. The death has occurred at his residence at' Mangere of Mr. A. C. Poad, aged 78. Mr. Poad, who was born at St. Doininic, Cornwall, came to New Zealand in the vessel Doric, in 1884. He was a blacksmith and wheelwright by trade, and worked at the Clydo Ironworks, Onehunga, for a number of years, later commencing business on his own account. He retired in 1917, and had since lived in retirement at Mangere. Mr. Poad is survived by his wife and two daughters, whilo there are five grandchildren. MR. F. E. BELL. Following a severe nervous breakdown and a serious illness, the death has occurred of Mr. Frank Ewart Bell, aged 57, of Sarsfield Street, Heine Bay. Mr. Bell was tho founder, of the firm of Adams, Bell, Limited, while he was also well known in Methodist Church circles. The only son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bell, ho was born in Bridgewater, Somerset., which lie left at the.ago of 19. Ho emigrated to Australia, where for two years he was engaged iu farming, later forming with his cousin, Mr. G. Adams, the firm of Adams Proprietary, Limited. This business soon proved successful, and in 1920 Mr. 13ell cnmc to New Zealand to found-the firm of Adams, Bell, Limited, commencing business in a small shop in Newton. Tho undertaking grew rapidly, but application to tho ever-increasing business brought about Mr. Bell's nervous breakdown, which was followed by a severe illness, resulting in his death. Mr. Bell was for some years a member of'tho Pitt Street Methodist Church choir. He was a member of the Auckland Trotting Club, lie is survived by his wife. MBS. RICHARD THORNTON. [IIV TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] THAMES, Monday. The death has occurred of Mrs. Richard Thornton Jit tho ago of 62 years. With her husband sho came to Thames from Wellington in tho lato eighties, later settling at Thornton Bay, which is named after Mr. Tlidrnton, who survives tho deceased. MR. W. HALL. [BY TELEGItAPa.—OWN correspondent. ] THAMES, Monday. Private advices from Vancouver report tlio sudden death of Mr. W. Hall, of Matatoki. Mr. Hall cumo to the Thames Valloy from the Selwyn settlement, Canterbury, 30 years ago. lie was one of the most successful breeders of Jersey cattle in the Dominion, and won many trophies at agricultural shows in recent years. Mr. Hall recently disposed of his famous Orange Dale herd &nd, accompanied by Mrs. Hall, set out on a world tour, to recuperate his health. The deCeased was prominent in local body affairs, and represented the Thames County on the Thames Hospital Board for tho past 12 years. MR. HENRY CHALTON. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] THAMES. Monday. Tlio death occurred yesterday of Mr. Henry Mangrove Chalton, at tho ago of 79. Mr. Chalton was born in Chester, England, in 1350, and came to the Dominion in tho ship Bluejacket, arriving at Auckland in March, 1860. He settled at Kawaka with his father and brothers on tho Grange fa:m, which they worked for 10 years, when tho Thames goldficlds was proclaimed. Tho family camo to Thames and later went to Netherton. being tho first settlers in that district. Mr. Samuel Chalton named tho district'Netherton after his old farm house near Chester, Netherton Hall. l\lr. Henry Chalton took tho first contract for cutting and hauling kahikatea bush to the Thames River. Ho later engaged in goldmining at Paeroa and Karangahake. Ho had lived in retirement for the past 15 years. Ho married in 1892 the eldest daughter of the late Mr. James Coutts, and is survived by bis widow, four son 3 and two daughters.
