ALL BLACK TRIAL.

;good individual play. :

WEAKNESS IN SCRUM WORK.

PROBABLES BEAT POSSIBLES,

[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION-] WELLINGTON, Monday.

Tlio All Black trial match was played at Athletic Park this afternoon. Although combination could nob bo looked for, nob a littlo individual brillianco was shown and tho material is availablo for a good sido after tho team has had a few games.

A noticeablo weakness was the scrummaging. Many times tho scrums buckled and players went sprawling on tho turf. It was freely admitted that radical steps will have to bo taken to put things right in this department of New Zealand Rugby beforo tho British team arrives next sca-

Dalley led the Probables and Porter captained, tho Possibles. Tho Possibles had tho advantage of a light northerly brcczo and tho sun in tho first spell. Steero beat Nepia in a dive for the ball and scored. Heazelwood converted with a fine kick. It was not long beforo Porter went over for a try in a handy position. Heazelwood just failed to convert. Daltey was playing a good game behind tho Probables pack. Probables opened their scoring account from a passing bout between Waterman, Oliver and Dalley. Nepia's attempt at goal hit tho upright, and rebounded. Injury to McWilliams. The scrum work was anything but good. In a very hard tackle McWilliams was injured and had to retire, Snow (Nelson) taking his place. Lilburnc, who was playing a great gamo at first five-eighths for Possibles, broke away and sent Hook over between the posts. Heazelwood easily converted. Lilburnc again made a beautiful opening which let Stringfcllow away and the Wairarapa centre swerved through to score. Heazelwood converted with a splendid kick, and Possibles led, 18-3. The selectors tried out somo new players in tho second spell. On the Probables sido Trotter (Mackenzie County) replaced Rushbrook at wing-thrcequarter, and Mase and Carlton took tho places of Bird and Palmer in the forwards. On tho other side D. Johnston (Taranaki) replaced Lilburnc at five-eighths, C. Johnson (Southland) took Leys' placo at half, and 0. Batchelor (Southland), E. Marslin (Otago), E. R. Thomas (Poverty Bay) replaced Steerc, Freitas and Palmer in the forwards. Some Effective Tackling. The opening of the second spell was marked by some very effective tackling. Porter started a passing movement in midfield, but Trotter intercepted and raced at a great pace for tho goal-line. Oliver missed a beautiful chance to score by stumbling just as he took a pass. Ilowevcr, the forwards wero in strong support and Coulston scored close to tho posts. Heazelwood was a trifle too cool when he ran back beyond tho 25yds. mark to get in his kick. Tho ball rebounded from an opponent and then a Possibles player got off-side. Nepia landed a good penalty goal. A little later Kivell shot, over the lino and Nepia kicked another goal, making the scores 18—14 in favour of Possibles.

Souter retired owing to injury and was replaced by Palmer. The standard of play was now a great improvement on that of the first spoil. Heazelwood, who was playing an excellent game at fullback, intercepted a pass in his own twenty-five and made a sensational run to Probables' line, where Ncpia held him up. Eventually Thomas crossed for a try, which Heazelwood .failed to improve. Dalley sent out a long pass which let Oliver away, and the Canterbury fiveeighths racod away to score in tho corner. Nepia converted with a great kick and Possibles' lead was reduced to two points. Dally and Waterman scored again and tho game ended with tho scores: Possibles, 24; Probables, 22.
