MOTOR REGISTRATION.
BELATED SATURDAY RUSH. EIGHT HUNDRED DEALT WITH. Mindful that from midnight on Friday last they were liable to prosecution, about 800 motorists who had neglected previously to re-register their motor-cars placed themselves within the law at the Welleslev Street registration office on Saturday morning. About 150 persons were waiting outsido tho door when it was opened at 9 o'clock, and between then and mid-day about 800 registrations were made. Up until about 10.30 o'clock the office hallway was packed nearly all the time, but from then onward the rush slackened. Tho staff of about 25 clerks dealt very capably with tho situation. It was tho busiest time tho registration office has experienced, but in spito of the 800 applications handled in three hours, making the total registrations to date just over 15,000, there aro still about 5500 motor vehicles not accounted for in Auckland. Probably a generous proportion has gone out of commission, while many vehicles aro temporarily in disuse. The secondhand motor-car shops must hold many cars which will not be re-registered until they again take tho road. There were some cars on the road yesterday carrying tho old plates, but they were very few. Tho number so far re-registered is 2000 in excess of that at the closing date last year.
