(Received June 2, 5.5 p.m.) Times Cable. LONDON, June 1. The Paris correspondent of the Times says yesterday's comments in the French press on the British general election were guarded. The newspapers, showed that they recognise the result will have repercussions in Europe which are not yet visible. L'lntransigeant says"France needs all her determination to safeguard her interests. Alhough Mr. MacDpnald is honest he favours a revision of the FrancoBritish debt convention, and ho agrees with Mr. Philip Snowden, who wants France to pay Britain more than she is doing." L'lnformation says it considers the British Labour Party will avoid extravagant Continental adventures, and will not hasten to nationalise the mines and other services. The possibility of the Liberals holding the balance between Labour and the Conservatives is regarded by this paper as unlikely to outlast the preliminary trial. The Berlin correspondent of the Times states that, although some of the German newspapers publish photographs of Mr. Mac Donald, as "England's new master," hasty conclusions are avoided. The foremost hope in Germany was that the elections would nullify Sir Austen Chamberlain's control of Britain's foreign policy, in which confidence has evaporated. However, the Conservative's dependence upon Liberal support would, it is felt, correct an undue leaning to the j Entente. Germany does not expect much even from a Labour Government, and does not anticipate that it will precipitate progress in the direction of the evacuation of the Rhineland. The papers remark that, considering the decision lies with the French, no British Government is likely to alter the foreign policy in a situation so closely approaching a deadlock as at present is indicated. BUSSIAN PRESS VIEW. FOREIGN POLICY CENSURED. INTERPRETATION OF POLLING. fa # JO * ' Australian Press Association—United Service (Received June 2, 5.15 p.m.) x MOSCOW. June 1. The Russian press interprets the British election as a complete condemnation of the Conservative policy. The Izvestia prophesies a reversion of Britain s foreign policy. The Ekonomicheskaia Jizn, another Moscow daily journal, says the electors, by voting against the policy indirectly endorsed the Soviet's struggle for peace and disarmament. AN ITALIAN OPINION. NEW EUROPEAN SITUATION. REPERCUSSION IN PARIS. Australian Press Association—United Service (Received June 2, 5.15 p.m.) ROME, June 1. II Tevere welcomes the result of the election. It says a British Labour Government cannot continue the collaboration between France and Britain, which is tending to consolidate into a European hegemony. The effects of the now international political situation will be felt at Geneva, in the Balkans and especially at Paris. The Labour Party, the newspaper says, must' now grapple with the unemployment problem. FORFEITED DEPOSITS. FATE OF 115 CANDIDATES. LABOUR MAN'S ILL-FORTUNE. Australian and N.Z. Press Association (Received June 2, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, June 1. Altogether 115 candidates forfeited their deposits, namely:— Labour . 34 Liborals SI Conservatives 17 Communists . . . . . . 21 Others •• 32 The Labour candidate at Abingdon, Berkshire, to savo his deposit had to poll 37123 votes. The lack of three-quarters of a vote cost him £l5O. Mr. Thomas Geo, " workers' candidate" at Wednesbury, polled only 61 votes—tho smallest total in any constituency. Eighty per cent, of the electors voted. It is estimatod that tho cost of,tho election, to all parties was £2,200,000. It, is stated that the Liberal Party spent £BOO,OOO.
