QUEENSLAND COAL.
ORDERS FROM THE EAST. LARGE CONTRACTS SIGNED. BRISBANE. May 16. According to Mr. W. Brand, member of the Legislative Assembly for Burrum, evidence of restoration of confidence in Queensland, as the result of the defeat of the Labour Government, is already coming to hand. Orders had been signed in tho Burrum district for 30,000 tons of coal for tho East, to be shipped from Urangan. Mr. Brand stated that tests of the coal had demonstrated that its calorific value was high and its ash content low.
The colliery proprietors of the Queensland Colliery Company, Ltd., of Howard, and the Burgowan Coal Company, Ltd., of Torbanlea, had had the orders under consideration, but were "dwelling" on the result of tho election. In view of the change of Government, and ol tho success of a party pledged to assist industry the colliery proprietors had signed up the orders.
A pleasing feature of the matter, said Mr. Brand, was that Queensland had secured trade that had previously gone to South Africa. It probably meant a likolihood of permanent trade in coal with the East, provided the necessary assistance was forthcoming, from the new Government. The orders would solve the unemployment problem in the Burram district and havo a beneficial effect in the Maryborough distrifct.
