SCHOLARSHIP WINNER.
A scholarship for post-graduate work ( in kindergarten has been awarded to Miss Emily McDonald, director of KelseyYaralla Free, Kindergarten. This scholarship, wliicJeijsairifis with it free tuition for one year and £IOO toward general, expenses, was- offered by the board of the Merrill-Palmer Training School, Michigan,, to the Dunedin Free Kindergarten Association. The opportunity came through * Professor Strong, who acted as intermediary, and to whom the association is deeply indebted/. Miss McDonald was chosen by a selecting committee from the -D.F.K.A. " This is the firss scholarship that has been offered to New Zealand irr this branch of., education, and should prove of inestimable, value to kindergartens| j The funds of the Dunedin HaWtiofr-been drawn on at all, as friends of the movement have willingly provided what was needed over and . above, the Scholarship. Miss McDonald will leave Dunedin in August in order to be in America at the beginning of their academic year. The Merrill-Palmer School of Home-making is situated in Detroit. Michigan, and is famous throughout the States. Under thss will of the late Mrs, Palmer this school was endowed with property valued at 3,000.000 dollars. It consists of a homemaking school, a nursery school, and living Quarters for senior students, all run on the most up-to-date, scientific "lines. In the nursery schools the children attend until late afternoon, and their health, food and rest are studied.
A nurse from Detroit Department of Health is in attendance, laboratory tests are made, and height, weight and general physical conditions are recorded. The diet is planned under the direction of n nutrition specialist, based upon the needs of each child as shown by the physical examination The co-operation of mothers is sought and a complete set of menu cards of dishes suitable for children is available. For one trained in kindergarten methods, year spent in this school will bo a wonderful opportunity to study the latest methods with a view to extending the work in New 'Zealand.
