OTAHUHU NEWS.

SOCIAL EVENING, A very pleasant evening was spent in the Mangere East Hall on Friday, the occasion being a reception to the firso year teams of the ( Mangere East Bowling Club, who were successful in winning the first year shield. Mr. J. Clark, president of the club, presented to Messrs. Prangley, Macauley, Saurey and Berrell, winners of 1928-29 tournament, and Messrs. Scown, Studd, Stephenson and Laslett, winners of the shield for 1927-28, silver fern badges in recognition of their two years' successes and for winning the last tournament, held on the Mangere green this month, he presented the former team with silver-mounted umbrellas. Messrs. Prangley and Studd replied for the respective teams. The opportunity also was taken by the president to make a presentation of a travelling bag to Mr. J. Dunn, a member of the club who is leaving the district, on behalf of his fellow bowlers. x Mrs. W. Knight, on behalf of the Ladies'' Croquet Club, took the opportunity of presenting to Mrs. A. Newsomo a bouquet of cyclamen and daisies, in which were folded a number of silk handkerchiefs, as a token of appreciation for services rendered, and in view of her' coming trip with Mr. Newsome to Great Britain, silk streamers bearing the words " bon voyage." A presentation by Mr. W. Knight to the club of a very fine honours board was accepted by the president, Mr. Clarke, with thanks on behalf of the club. Mr. Smytheman* (president of the Papatoetoe Bowling Club), Mr. G. V. Pearce (Otahuhu Club), Mr. S. W. House, of the Manukau County Council, also addressed the gathering.

Supper was served by the ladies of the Croquet Club and a five hundred tournament was played, the winners being Mrs. W. Knight and Mr. S. W. House.
