THE WANGANUI MEETING.

FIRST DAY'S EVENTS. GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED. The Waaganui Jockey Club's Winter Meeting opens to-day. Good fields aro engaged ia the various events, an<i with a number of horses likely to bo candidates for honours at the Auckland meeting next month engaged that circumstance will serve to invest the racing with additional interest. Tho following is a list of the acceptances for the various events:—

PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. tI3Y TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WANGANUI. Wednesday. Earn has fallen almost incessantly for 48 hours, but the track will dry quickly if the rain ceases, and in any case it will not be bad for tlie Wanganui meeting tomorrow. • J. Brown arrived to-day with Bisox. Sho looks much the better for her race at Hawcra. Llanore and Tenacre will probably start on Saturday. Since his arrival here Comical has done so well over hurdles and on the flat that he is now one of the fancied horses for the Century Hurdles. Mister Gamp is in great order i»nd should run well. Tilley brought his team of five in last night. They are Ruanui, Limited, Conecnt, Thrift and the two-year-old French Raid. Ruanui' and Limited are both in splendid fettle and on their track work this morning are sure to run well in then engagements. One of the best gallops of the morning over half a mile was put up by Value, who ran tho distance in 51 4-5s nicely and is evidently in. excellent fettle. SEVERAL HORSES SCRATCHED. [BST TELEGRAPH. —I'RESS ASSOCIATION.] WANGANUL Wednesday. The following additional scratcliipga have been made for the opening day of the Wanganui Jockey Clubs Meeting: Purua Handicap.—Latakia (3.10 p.m.), Potoaform (7,40 p.m.), Havering (7.50 p.m.), Higli Society (8 p.m.). Hack Steeples.—Mandarin (8.10 p.m.). Borough Handicap.—Llanore (7.5 p.m.). For all engagements: Dishonoured (4.15 p.m.). _____ NOTES FROM ELLERSLIE. GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. BY ARCHER. Southern writers who saw Havering race at Hawera claim that ho was unlucky not to win on both days. The three-year-old has been performing rather Qonsislently in his class all through the season and lately appears to have made some improvement. He is nicely placed with 8.'.! in tho first division of tho Purua Hack Handicap at Wanganui and only has to run up to form to bo in tho firing line at the finish.

Consistency has been a feature of the latest efforts of Royal Acre, who appears to have regained all hi 3 dash on the flat after a short period at hurdling in the summer. Royal Aero is a very smart hack when in fonn, aud, although he is topweight with 8.9, should bo capable of running prominently in tho second division of tho Purua Hack Handicap at Wanganui.

Last year Horomea effected a surprise in leading from end to end in tho Connolly Handicap. In t,ho meantime she has been put to hurdling and has run several decent races in this department. She read 3 nicely placed with 0.13 in the Hack Hurdles at Wanganui to-day, and, although she failed to show up at Hawera, may prove dangerous in her coming engagement.

For a horse that was having his second start over country, and who had fallen in his previous outing, Royal Elm gave promise in finishing second to Brigadier Bill in the Adanison Steeplechase at Hawera and slight improvement on that effort will make his prospects rosy in the Hack Steeplechase at Wanganui to-day, where lie is in with the nice weight of 9.8 in a class that is far from strong. Royal Elm schooled satisfactorily over the fences on the course the other morning.

A new aspirant to jumping honours in Joy King is expected to make his first public appearance as a hurdler in the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles at Wanganui to-day. A horse with the brilliancy of Joy King should prove an excellent hurdler provided that ho takes kindly to jumping, and therefore hia display will be followed with interest. Lack of experience may bo against him for awhile, but a few runs in public might make a lot of difference.

So far J. Williamson has not made a start with the five yearlings in liis stable but ho will shortly commence to put the youngsters through the early stages of their education. The yearlings in his stable comprise Thespia (brown gelding by Thespian—Rose Queen), * chestnut colt by Mountain King—Obeisance, a brown colt by Polymcstor—Ottova, a brown oolt by Great Barrier—Headlight (dam of Gem-' light), and a bay gelding by Treclare— Lady Mildred.

Vox a begijiuer Cybclo displayed groat promise as a hurdler in running fourth on the first day at To Rapa and tlien winning from that good horse Kawini on the second dny. It is possiblo that sho may have imp»ovod a gowjg deal-with the two runs and perhaps she may show to even greater advantage at Wsnganui. where sho will be a competitor in tho hack hurdle events. It is in favour of Cybolo that she jumps with plenty of confidence.

The I'urua Hack Handicap at Wanganui to-day is to bo run in two divisions, but these will not bo treated as separate races, although tho club had the option of doing: so, as there was only a seven-event pro"gramme. Dividends will therefore be paid on the winners of the divisions only. The action of tho club in the matter has caused a good deal of adverse comment.

After an absence of several months irom racing, Consent is expected to make a reappearance in tho Borough Handicap at Wanganui to-day. Possibly ho may be in need of a run, although P. Tilley knowß how to turn his charges out thoroughly ready. If Consent is forward enough to show his true form, his opponents will be kept very busy, moro especially if tho going is soft, as lie revels in easy ground. THE DAHGAVItLE CI/ÜB. Lev telegraph.—own correspondent.] DARGAVILLE, Wednesday. At a special general meeting of members of tho Dargaville Racing Club held last liiglit a "new act of rules, as submitted by the stewards, was approved and adoptod. CANTERBURY GOSSir. [EX TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CIIRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. G. Murray Aynsley has been spelling most of his team, but he has made a start now to get them ready for spring racing. Tho horses ha put into work this week are Chide, Starshootcr and the two-year-olds Stately. Netley and Meprisant. Don Jose ha 3 resumed work after a lengthy spell, which was necessitated by an internal complaint. Ho appears to bo all right and may turn out useful nest season. The Martian gelding Marshnm is a regular worker, but so far ho has been a disappointment to F. D. Jones. The hurdler Bonomel broke down on the eve of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Easter Meeting and R. Longley has sent him home. His racing career . may be considered at an end. Silver Coot and Noteworthy are enjoying a spell and they will not be seen again during tho winter months.
