LACK OF EXPRESSION.
Speaking at tho Dominion refresher course of kindergarten teachers held* in Christcliurch last week Professor Shelley gave some of his ideas on the early mental development of the child. Emphasising the importance of developing the creative faculty rather than .the " receiving" faculty Professor Shelley said that the lack of expression of at child who left school showed how far the schools were from education. " Unless you can give the human beings a fuller means of expressing themselves," he added, " the cutting down of the hours of labour will bo an evil thing for human life. We have no outlet for our emotions in creative work. What does tho avoragp person do? He does not read, but decides to go somewhere. Education ought to be creative, and not merely of a passive nature, Of course, the child won't do anything new, but if ho faces the world with new eyes, and faces problems as if they were being dono for the first time ho is-on the right track."
