NEW STEAMER SERVICE.
; DUNEDIN TO AUSTRALIA.
INTENTIONS OF GOVERNMENT.
[El' TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Monday.
A deputation from the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce to-day thanked Sir Joseph Ward for what is being done by the Government to re-establish a shipping service between the South Island and Australian ports. The Prime Minister said the Government was advertising in England as well as locally. It hoped that a local steamship company might get the service, but at, any rate the Government was determined that a service should be established. Wellington was included in the "ship's itinerary because it was intended to offer a dual service, with a steamer going each way. That was as near as they could get in the direction of encouraging the Union Company to tender. i Sir Joseph said lie was hopeful that .Victoria and Tasmania would co-operate with New Zealand in this matter, but at the worst the New Zealand Government was prepared to give a subsidy and provide for it for two years. His opinion was that if the service were secured for two years it would always be maintained.
