A COSTLY OVERSIGHT.
AUCTIONEER FINED £2OO
"JUST OVER THE BORDER."
At the Police Court at Tweed Heads, Northern New South Wales, recently, Sydney Alfred Thornton, auctioneer, of Messrs. Thornton and Pearce, Brisbane, was fined £2OO, for a breach of the..New South Wales Licence Act by selling without a licence.
Constable Barrett said that he saw defendant selling a property by auction 50 or 40 feet from the border, on the New South Wales side. When spoken to after the sale defendant admitted that he did not have a New South Wales licence, and said that he had not given the matter a thought, for he had held an auctioneer's licence in New South Wales for .10 years before 1925.
Defendant in evidence said that he could easily have avoided the breach by stepping back about thirty feet into Queensland territory while conducting the sale. His present Queensland licence extended to the border within a few feet of where the sale was held.
