TO-DAY'S WEATHER.

HERALD'S SPECIAL FORECAST. Th& following weather forecast for 24 hours from 7 a.m. (o-day was supplied to us by Mr. H. M. Vincent last evening:— The intense .cyclone is tiow operating over the North Island, causing stormy weather over a wide area. Expect further unsettled weather, with rain generally, and much mist and fog in coastal areas. Heavy and considerable rain is expected throughout tho Auckland Province, with rivers flooded. Thunderstorms are likely in places near tho east coaSt. Easterly to south-easterly gales are indicated' northward of New Plymouth and Napier, and strong soutlierlies ruling in the South. Very heavy seas on tho east coast of tho North Island, especially northward from East Cape. Rough and increasing seas in Cook Strait, mainly moderate on the west coast, Tho close inter-action of the low barometric pressure system centred northward of tho Dominion, and the high pressure area - in tho south, has resulted in a steep barometric gradient being created. These conditions are the primary cause of the present severe weather, the disturbance being tropical in character. Cold temperatures, but somewhat milder shortly. GOVERNMENT REPORT. The Government meteorologist reported last evening as follows: —A very intense cyclone is centred north of Capo Maria and is moving slowly southwards. Pres-' sure is still high from Sydney to southern New Zealand and the Chatham Islands. Indications are for freshening east to north winds south of Greymouth and Kaikoura; elsewhere strong south-east to easterly winds to gales. Seas rough to heavy from Cook Strait northward; considerable swell thence southwards on the East Coast; moderate on the wost const of the South Island. Strong southeasterly winds to gales and rough seas in the eastern Tasman Sea. Weather unsettled and in places stormy from Nelson and Marlborough northwards, with rain. Many heavy falls with soriie floods in northern rivers. Later rain extending to other districts. Cold temperatures with some frosts in the south. RAINFALL RECORD.
