FIRE ON A STEAMER.
VESSEL AT NEWCASTLE, OUTBREAK IN COPRA CARGO. FUMES HAMPER FIREMEN. (Received May 10, 11.45 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 10. A message from Newcastle says a destructive fire broke out in the copra on board the steamer Golden Eagle this afternoon. The firemen were hampered by the dense smoke and fumes. The vessel took a decided list before the firo was under control. Tho Golden Eagle is on her way to Honolulu. The Golden Eagle is a vessel of 5436 tons, on the American Registry. She left Los Angeles on March 15 for Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle, and was on her return voyage.
