NEW SHIPPING SERVICE.
MELBOURNE TO BLUFF. AUSTRALIAN PROPOSAL. SYDNEY, April 21. The announcement that a passenger shipping service will he established shortly between Melbourne, Hobart and the Bluff, was made by Sir Walter Lee, Minister of Lands arid Works in Tasmania, who arrived at Sydney by the Dlimaroa. He said negotiations with Sir Joseph Ward, Primo Minister of New Zealand, had not proceeded far enough to enable him to make a definite statement. A good deal depended on the attitude of the Victorian Government. Some form of subsidy would have to bo provided to induce the shipping companies to run the proposed service. The main advantages of the scheme wouid be to dispense with trans-shipping. If it were decided to establish the service the New Zealand Government would probably call for tenders. The service would be fortnightly and the vessels would run from the Bluff to Melbourne, from there to Hobart and back to the Bluff. There was a possibility of mails also being carried.
