ABANDONED RAILWAY.
ROTORUA-TAUPO LINE. PETITION TO PARLIAMENT. [BV TELEGRArH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ROTORUA, Thursday. The Kotorua Borough Council last evening agreed to a request from the Rotorua-Taupo Progress League that the council should sign a petition to be presented to Parliament asking for reasons why tho Rotorua-Taupo railway had been discontinued and praying that Parliament reconsider tho question. The Mayor, Mr. J. N. McLean, moved that the request be granted and that the petition bo signed by the Mayor and town clerk on behalf of tho council. In speaking to the motion ho said ho thought that when the question came before tho last meeting of tho council it had been misunderstood. His motion had been to petition Parliament, not tho Government. This was not clearly understood, although tho wording of his motion was quite clear. Ho approached this question without the slightest party feeling. His advocacy of this line had been consistent for a period of over 18 years. He considered it was vital to the development of Rotorua and to the settlement- of large areas of land in the district. Mr. T. Jackson, deputy-mayor, seconded the motion. Ho said the council was porfectly justified in signing tho petition. Ho saw no logical argument that could be used against it. Several other council members explained that they had not understood the motion before tho last meeting.
The motion was carried unanimously. Mr. C. H. Clinkard, M.P., a member of the council, was absent.
