HOSPITAL'S HANDICAP.
CANDLE-LIGHT OPERATIONS
REMEDY FOR COROMANDEL. By the fitful aid of kerosene lamps and candle-light operations have to be performed at the Coromandel Hospital, and the Hospital Board recently made representations to the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, Minister of Health, with a view to arranging for the generation of electrical power for lighting the institution. It was suggested to the Minister that there was an adjacent supply of water suited for the promotion of a small hydroelectric schcrpe, and Mr. Stallworthy promised to secure a report on the project from an engineer of the Public Works Depaitment. When in Auckland on Wednesday (he Minister said he had jusfc received that report, which was entirely unsatisfactory.
" I am informed that there is not sufficient water to develop even a small scheme, and that there is no possibility of any storage in the valley," said the Minister. " The engineer, however, recommended that a small oil-engine plant, similar t-o that in use in other small hospitals in various parts of the Dominion, might be installed at a cost of about £SOO, and I am passing that information ori to the Hospital Board for its consideration."
