KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR.
RECENT WAIUKU FATALITY* ELDERLY RESIDENT'S DEATH. [BY TELE Gil A PIT. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.) WAIUKU. Thursday. An inquest into the death of Mr. (Arthur Knight, of Waiuku, who was killed through being knocked down by a motor-* ear at the corner of Queen and Kent Streets, Waiuku, about 7.45 p.m. ° a March 26, was held by the district coro* nor, Mr A. M Barriball, yesterday. Evidence was given by the driver of tha car, Geoffrey Marks, of Glenbrook, that ho noticed deceased stepping from the footpath across the road as ho rounded the corner Witness started to pull up, but deceased _ hesitated too. Consequently witness continued, but deceased stepped forward right in froij of the car, giving no time to swerve the car to avoid him. . Corroborative evidence was given by tn® wife of the previous witness, who was with him in the car. Evidence as to deceased's injuries wa • given by Dr. C. E. Howden, who said the cause of death was shock following cerebral injuries, the result of a fractut of the base of the skull. ■■ Tho coroner commented that the ev dence indicated that there had been a unfortunate misunderstanding by ho deceased and tho driver. Deceased w 69 years of ago, and his eyesight was f - fective, which necessitated him wearu'E glasses. Ho was thus probably and this may have caused him to run J 11 .• the car, the driver of which appeared, have taken reasonablo care. A verdict of accidental death turned.
