h'TIN POT' LITTLE BODIES."

ADVOCACY OF AMALGAMATION

"I do not sec why independent boroutrhs \k» Newmarket, should exist in the metropolitan 'district—they should he one with rhe city." said Mr. G. Baildon, Mayor tf Auckland, in the course of an election campaign address at Parnell on Saturday evening-

Mr. Baildon said that approximately one-third of the city's rates were collected from an area within a half-mile radius of the chief pest office, but th?iv were spent over a much wider area. Touching briefly on the benefits of amalgamation with the city, he cited the case of Point

Chevalier, which had been provided with

«ll modern improvements within a very ) short time after the merger. Is would be an excellent thing if all the " tin-pot" little independent bodies in Auckland ■K-ere welded into a greater whole. Speaking generally in defence of the Titv Council's administration, Mr. Baildon said ho had demanded and secured for ! f}j e Civic Square sites' rentals sufficiently high to ensure that there would be no trafficking in the leases and therefore that no one should profit at the expense of the ratepayers. The effect of his action was evident in the fact that nearly every lessee was now building. Mr. Baildon dealt with salient features of the City Council's town-planning, jewerage, drainage, water supply and street improvement works. In the last two years £52,500 had been spent in unemployment relief work. Explanatory of his reasons for seeking re-election to the Mayoralty, Mr. Baildon said that certain allegations had been made against him, and it was a desire to clear his character which had prompted bira to stand again. " I have been 30 years in public life, and I have always done what I honestly believed to be the right thing," he said. " Certainly no one can ever say I have done anything ' crooked.' " , A vote of thanks and confidence was carried unanimously. HAEBOnt BOABD SEAT. MR. MACKENZIE'S CAMPAIGN. In connection with his campaign for reelection iso the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. H. R.
