TALL FESCUE.
Sir_—Two letters-have appeared -lately in tho Herald giving a short-cut to tha eradication of tall fescue, i.e., paspalum., Now as one who has slaved, spent his capital and at last been compelled <o. take the count, I can assure your correspondents that on the infested areas of tho Hauraki Plains tall fescue will beat paspalum every time. In support of ray, opinion I may state that a large area of land purchased by tho Government afl over £3O per acre for closer settlement! has been going begging at an upset prica of £4 per acre and all sorts of. concessions thrown in. This area was tackled bv the Lands Department with all its resources, tho latest machinery, capital, etc., and under tho able supervision or a recognised agriculturist. Iho result is is well known. They packed their traps and "tractored" silently away. As to small holdings, tho Orongo. settlers are recognised as a body of toilers second to none, and include men' of very extensive farming experience, and they have failed either to establish paspalum or eradicata tall fescue on the infested area. Thry recognise that their salvation depends on the common sense of the present Minister of Lands, not paspalum. Fescuzd Jock.
