LICENSING OF MOTORS.

COMMENCEMENT ON MONDAY.

FIRST 27,600 FOR AUCKLAND

THE INSURANCE PROVISIONS.

Tho relicensing and compulsory insurance of motor vehicles will commence at the Wellesley Street post office on Monday. The new number-plates carry white figures on a dark blue ground, and for the total needs of the Dominion 158,000 pairs of plates have been manufactured for cars, trucks and other commercial vehicles. The motor-cycle numbers run up to 32,500. Numbers running from 1 to 27,600 have been allocated to the Auckland postal district, which extends from Mercer to tho North Cape. In tho Thames area the numbers will run from 27,601 to 32,100, and the Hamilton group will extend from 32 101 to 43,700. Tho numbers increase running south, tho Wellington allocation being 83,001 to 100,900. The remaining 57,1C0 will be absorbed in tho South Island, the highest numbers being distributed in Invercargill. The new number-plates must bo attached on Juno 1, but in order to give motorists an opportunity to avoid repetition of eleventh-hour congestion, this early start with tho issue has been made. In particular, owners of more than one vehicle are advised to make early application. In every case it will be necessary to furnish the engine and chassis numbers. These will be found on the original registration papers issued when tho cai was new, but if the documents jiavo been lost the motorist may need to conduct an investigation among tho oily deposits on tho engino. Tho numbers must bo furnished for both the licensing and insurance papers.

Tho car-owner may nominate any one of the 42 named insurance companies for tho £1 fee. The outer suburban post offices will also issue number-plates, and motorists who licensed at Onehunga, Devonport, or other offices last year will bo required to return to the same depot.
