A CITY'S WATER SUPPLY.

There was a time when a long period of dry weather in Manchester meant a shortag'o of water, but all that has been altered. Tne City Council tackled this problem with typical northern shrewdness. They went to tho Lake District, where rainfalls are real rainfalls. It,was a huge undertaking to construct a reservoir nearly four miles long, with a capacity of 8.200.000.000 gallons, and to carry the water over a hundred miles to Manchester, but it was done. Including its help to tho Ship Canal Company, the Manchester Corporation lias invested nearly £40,000,000 in its various enterprises. It is doubtful if such a record can bo equalled anywhere clso in the world.
